The Grunts with some variety
Inspired by the renowned BBC variety show, Later… with Jools Holland, local band The Grunts have created a concept that’s set to become a steadfast addition to the city’s music scene. Launching tonight, Friday from 9pm at The Roundy, their show, Later with The Grunts, will see former Green Party TD and Senator Dan Boyle appear on stage with Annette Buckley, Versives and Wasps Vs Humans.
Drummer, James Spillane, tells Play, “We have played The Roundy a few times there with other bands and normally only get 20 minutes at the end of the night. So they suggested we come in on a Friday night because it’s open later. Hence the ‘later’ bit,” he smiles. “I’m also a fan of Jools Holland on the TV. The idea that you can have different acts all on the one stage just means that there is something there for everyone.”
The night will include three acoustic songs by Dan Boyle, who will perform from his album, Third Adolescence, while vocalist Annette Buckley will also appear on stage ahead of the launch of her new single, Happy Go Lucky, which is due for release next month.
Two-piece electronica outfit, Versives, will also play, as well as one- man performance poetry project, Wasps Vs Humans.
Along with music and slam poetry, the event will also include one-to- one interviews with each entertainer, while the evening will end on a high note with an acoustic performance by all the artists. “We are thinking about doing one of The Grunts’ songs, Party Weirdo, as hopefully everyone will be in a party mood at the end of the night,” says Spillane.
And in keeping with their British counterpart, Later with The Grunts will also be streamed online. The idea, Spillane explains, is to open the event up to emigrants across the globe, allowing Corkonians to go online and participate in the evening. “Hopefully the event will prove successful and will showcase the local talent we have here in Cork. It will also be a platform for many who might be intimidated by the idea of doing a full gig,” says Spillane.
Later with The Grunts is also planned for February 17th, with Dimitri Datus, Karrie O’Sullivan and Niamh Murphy; March 3rd, with Finny (Belsonic Sound), Arcadeans, Poor Fred and Dylan of My Evil; and April 13th, featuring Without The Brains, Edel Curtin and Ronan Leonard.
The event kicks off at 9pm and tickets are €5 at the door. For more information on the online streaming, see ‘The Grunts’ on Facebook.
